Essaouira is the closest coastal city to Mar-rakech, with the Atlantic ocean breathing its kind breeze on this beautiful town that was always a shelter for ocean navigators and traders, Essaouira was occupied by the Portuguese and called Castelo Real de Mogador during the 14th century. During the 16th century, powers including Spain, England, the Netherlands and France tried in vain to conquer the locality. Essaouira remained a haven for the export of sugar and molasses and as an anchorage for pirates ( not anymore thankfully),
